UN Ready to Impose Further Sanctions on North Korea

UN Ready to Impose Further Sanctions on North Korea

(AP Photo/Wong Maye-E, File). If not, will Trump accept the growing calls from Congress to start targeting Chinese companies that help Pyongyang access worldwide markets, even if that puts U.S.

Trump also has flexed USA military muscle, though with little apparent effect in deterring North Korean leader Kim Jong Un from his rapid tempo of weapons tests. He added, however, that in his view, "there is still a window for trying to negotiate with North Korea... at a point which it is much less of a threat to the U.S".

As North Korea launched a new type of "medium long-range" ballistic missile that it claimed to be capable of carrying a heavy nuclear warhead, U.S. Rep. John Faso praised the countervailing policies of the Trump administration.

It also said that North Korea is "greatly increasing tension in the region and beyond" and that the country should immediately show "sincere commitment to denuclearisation through concrete action".

Speaking in China, Putin called for a peaceful solution to the ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula, Russia's Sputnik news agency reported. It further called on all countries to implement the six North Korean sanctions resolutions already adopted by the world body "in an expeditious and serious manner".

Putin joins China and new South Korean president Moon Jae-in in calling for talks with the North.

The UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday both slammed the most recent ballistic missile launches conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

He added that the launch violates the Security Council resolution, and said that Guterres has called calls on North Korea to "ensure full compliance with its global obligations".

The test is unlikely to mark a new phase in North Korea's missile and nuclear ambitions.

The council is expected to discuss the next steps during its meeting late evening today.

The radar of an advanced US missile defense system in South Korea detected the launch of a North Korean ballistic missile two days ago, South Korea's defense minister told lawmakers on Tuesday.

A closed-door emergency Council session was set for Tuesday.

British U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft also called the test a threat to worldwide peace and security and said "the United Kingdom favors tougher sanctions".

"French Ambassador Francois Delattre also called for tougher measures by the Security Council".

It also tested the North's capability to carry a "large-size heavy nuclear warhead", KCNA said.

It landed 60 miles south of the Russian port of Vladivostok.

China is the linchpin of Trump's strategy for halting North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the USA mainland.

38 North says US cities aren't at risk today because the full missile system needed to reach them has yet to be tested (this includes re-entry technology needed to return a warhead back into the atmosphere from space).

Mr Moon, South Korea's first liberal leader in almost a decade, said as he took his oath of office last week that he would be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right.
