Djokovic advances to 3rd round in Madrid Open

Djokovic advances to 3rd round in Madrid Open

Djokovic holds one of the weakest of his seasons in the last 10 years.

Rafael Nadal set up a semifinal with Novak Djokovic after withstanding a tough challenge from David Goffin 7-6 (3), 6-2 at the Madrid Open on Friday.

If Thiem had the win of the day, surely Alexander Zverev had the line of the day when he determined that the reason he had a game to suit all surfaces was "just pure talent".

"I couldn't imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasn't sure how I was going to play".

The controversial Australian did show some early fight, however.

Lopez, ranked 38 in the world, beat Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.

Nadal finally broke in the third game of the second set before having to stave off four break points on his own serve to consolidate his lead at 3-1. "I am happy for the fact that I did not take my foot off the gas as it is important to keep pressing specially against good players", Yuki said.

Djokovic hasn't made it this deep into any event since winning the title in Doha at the beginning of the year. In his first clay-court tournament, in Monte Carlo, Djokovic was eliminated by David Goffin in quarterfinals.

"It was a handsome game, we both played at the very highest level and there were great points for everyone to see", Nadal told Spanish Television. "Eventually the game will come together".

"I played aggressively and used a lot of forehands".

It was Djokovic's first match since splitting with longtime coach Marian Vajda. Fognini served for the set at 5-4 but was not able to capitalize on his chance. "In the end I played as I had dreamed", said Coric.

"My level of tennis was not so high today, but I managed to make it through the first round".

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal's quest for a third straight title after wins in Monte Carlo and Barcelona faces a stiff test against Nick Kyrgios this morning (Singapore time).

The Spaniard will meet seventh seed Kei Nishikori who subdued the challenge of Diego Schwartzman 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.

The world No. 2 Djokovic is 11-2 versus Nishikori.

The sixth-seeded Nishikori said his wrist was "not 100 percent" and he didn't "want to risk" a more serious injury.

"I didn't feel too good before the tournament on the court". Nadal has failed to beat his semi-final opponent in their last seven meetings with his last win coming in the finals of the French Open in 2014.

Canada's Eugenie Bouchard also made it through after Germany's Angelique Kerber retired in the second set of their match.

Third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania defeated 16th-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova was also victorious today after she dispatched Qiang Wang of China 6-4, 7-5.
