Cyber security experts warn public to update software following ransomware attack

Cyber security experts warn public to update software following ransomware attack

"I'm anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn on their machines on Monday", he said.

"We've never seen anything like this", the head of the European Union's policing agency told Britain's ITV television Sunday.

So far there has been no progress reported in efforts to determine who launched the plot.

"When you go into work tomorrow to make sure your systems have been updated", he added during Sunday's interview, "make sure your chief information officer is right on top of this".

The cyber attack has affected more than 200,000 victims in around 150 countries.

RCGP chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said in a statement: "GPs and our teams around the United Kingdom are working hard and doing whatever is within our power locally to minimise disruption so that we can provide 'business as usual" - or as close to it as possible - services to our patients [on Monday]'.

"We are now getting reports that there might be two other incidents, so that would bring the total number of incidents in Australia to three", Tehan told ABC News.

And more local computer systems are expected to be hit.

Extortionist hackers who may be using leaked computer exploits from the U.S. National Security Agency infiltrated computers in dozens of countries in a fast-spreading attack that forced British hospitals to turn away patients and breached systems at Spain's Telefonica SA and organizations from Russian Federation to Taiwan.

The attack, caused by ransomware, resulted in a widespread breakdown of the NHS.

WanaCryptor 2.0 is only part of the problem. The malicious software has infected more than 75,000 computers in 99 countries worldwide on Friday, a lot of them concentrated in Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan, according to Dutch cybersecurity company Avast Software BV.

Always update systems and software with the latest security updates. This software was developed by NSA and funded by American taxpayers.

The group said it was stolen from a repository of NSA hacking tools.

"Once a machine is infected it will scan the entire internal network and infect other vulnerable machines".

The ransomware locks down computers and has been demanding payments of $US300 ($AU406) to $US600 ($AU812) to restore access.

Government agencies and universities were among those hit as well as petrol stations, ATMs and hospitals, it said.

Also backup any important data and ensure the latest WannaCry patch is installed. The list includes the Russian interior ministry, FedEx, National Health Service of Britain, the production unit of Renault Dacia in Mioveni, a Nissan production plant in England, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn, Spanish telecom giant Telefonica, Portuguese telecom operator Portugal Telecom and the Argentinian Telefonica Argentina among others.

UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd and health secretary Jeremy Hunt are holding a meeting of the country's emergency response committee, COBRA, to assess further action.

"The affected company doesn't fall under critical infrastructure, it's not a medical or health service and it is not a big company", he said.

U.S. package delivery giant FedEx, European auto factories, Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, Britain's health service and Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail network were among those hit.
