Police officer accidentally overdoses during drug bust

Police officer accidentally overdoses during drug bust

An East Liverpool Police officer overdosed after responding to a drug-related call Friday night, WKBN reported.

Police said they witnessed Justin Buckle, 25, of East Liverpool perform a drug transaction. After arresting two males, police searched the auto where they found white powder spread throughout the vehicle.

Green patted Buckel down, noticing he was covered in a white powdery substance, which is now believed to be fentanyl - an opioid that can be absorbed through the skin.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid analgesic that is like morphine, but can be 50 to 100 times more powerful, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Green had participated in the arrest of two men Friday night who were suspected of conducting a drug deal inside a auto.

Lt. Gerard Slattery, head of the vice squad, which often runs across large quantities of drugs while serving search warrants, said his officers also rely on gloves and have Narcan with them when they serve a warrant in case someone is exposed.

Then, as officers were standing around and talking, someone told Green he had some powder on his shirt. This included wearing gloves and a mask while searching the vehicle, but at some point, he must have brushed up against the powered drug and got some on his shirt, according to WKBN 27 First News. The captain told reporters, "We changed our procedures to where we used to field test drugs", Wright said. He casually brushed the powder off his shirt without a thought, and one hour later he passed out. "Fentanyl is one hundred times stronger than heroin carfentanyl is a thousand times stronger than that".

"They called an ambulance for him and the ambulance responded for him", said Wright.

A total of four doses of Narcan had to be administered to completely revive him.

Wright also noted that due to the extent of the drug crisis in this country, police departments have been forced to make changes in their protocol.

"We have kits in our vehicle. we have gloves, bags - we double bag all our evidence that we don't know what it is", Wright says.

The situation started when an off-duty drug task force officer recognized Buckle, of East Liverpool, driving a "familiar" vehicle.

Wright said Green was doing fine as of Sunday. He received three more doses of Narcan at the hospital, according to WKBN.
