Si Woo Kim becomes youngest victor of Players Championship

Ian Poulter, of England, hits from the 15th fairway during the final round of The Players Championship golf tournament Sunday, May 14, 2017, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

"Usually I'm very nervous, but last year I won one of the tournaments and then I could get the two years of exemption", Kim said. That card effectively went to waste, and Kim spent the next two years on the developmental tour until earning his card back to the big leagues.

"Two, three weeks ago to have been in a position where I wasn't playing The Players and was looking to write nice letters to Jack (Nicklaus) for Memorial (tournament) and all of those great tournaments that I'd like to play in, things change pretty quick with good golf, and that's what I've done this week". He stuffed his tee shot to 5 feet on the par-3 17th for birdie, and after hooking his tee shot into the water on the 18th, he rolled in a long putt from off the 18th green for par.

"I got close there on 11 once I made birdie, and obviously I wanted to try and put a little bit more pressure on, but it was tough to get it close [to the hole]", Poulter said.

"I've enjoyed it and hopefully this is just a stepping stone to pressing on for the rest of this year". Kim hit the 17th green and two-putted from 45 feet, and he smashed another drive right down the middle.

Kim, ranked 75th in the world, became only the second non-US player to win twice on the US PGA Tour before age 22, joining last month s Masters victor, Spaniard Sergio Garcia. He was the only player to seriously challenge Kim until he ran out of holes, and then it was a matter of finishing second. He pushed his approach to the 18th so far to the right that it caromed off hospitality tents and bounced off a cart path into a palmetto bush. He took a penalty drop, and then hit wedge over the trees and almost holed it, tapping in for bogey.

"It was a big shock to the system to hit one of those nasty shanks when I've hit it as good as I have all week", Poulter said.

Cabrera Bello played the final three holes at the Stadium Course-the par-5 16th, par-3 17th and lengthy par-4 closing hole-in just eight strokes, 4 under par. Remarkably, Kim never did.

"He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure", runner-up Ian Poulter said.

"It's good golf, I'm playing solid (and) I'm happy to be here because a few weeks ago I wasn't, so let's hope tomorrow I can take advantage of that".

Day, who romped to a four-shot victory in 2016, finished at seven over for the tournament. - With the lowest round of the week in the 2017 Players a 66, and the best in the final round a 68, the thought that, "You don't have to do much around here" to be in contention was as clear as ever.

And, by the way, if you think we may be exaggerating his second shot on 18 as a shank, Poulter confirmed it was such himself.

Kim was also the fourth different leader at the of each round, proving once again this course tested every golfer's abilities.

The 41-year-old was the only player to stay bogey free in windy Florida conditions and he sits on six-under par - three shots off the lead. It was just the third albatross in Players Championship history, and the first on that hole. "Never once did he look flustered at all".
