Senate Intelligence Panel Subpoenas Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn

Senate Intelligence Panel Subpoenas Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn

Representative Jim Himes, a Connecticut Democrat who is a member of the House intelligence committee that is also investigating Russian meddling in the election, said access to such financial records is one of the reasons lawmakers have been clamouring for Trump to release his tax returns. If Flynn doesn't respond, he could potentially face a maximum of a year in jail and a $100,000 fine for contempt of Congress.

Then-national security adviser General Michael Flynn arrives to deliver a statement during the daily briefing at The White House, Washington, DC, February 1.

The development comes a day after United States President Donald Trump, in a bid to sweep away the man who is responsible for an investigation into whether members of his campaign team colluded with Russian Federation in its interference in last year's elections, fired FBI director James Comey.

Flynn was sacked for misleading vice president Mike Pence about the nature of his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, who was among the Russian diplomats who met today with Trump at the White House.

Flynn is one of four former Trump aides that Senate investigators sent requests to.

"I've said from the beginning that our intentions are to get information from all the individuals of interest, and I will go to whatever lengths I feel necessary", Burr said in a brief hallway interview at the Capitol, hours before Trump fired Comey on Tuesday.

Commentary: Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) questioned top intelligence officials during a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence open hearing on Worldwide Threats.

Former Acting US Attorney-General Sally Yates testified on Monday that she had warned the White House in January that Gen Flynn had been compromised and could have been vulnerable to blackmail by Russian Federation.

Flynn's lawyer declined comment to CNN Wednesday evening.
