Google wants to fix Android's update problem (no, really!) with Project Treble

None of them really panned out, but I begrudgingly have to admit that the project they just unveiled - Project Treble - has some more meat to it than the vague promises and alliances they usually peddle. Project Treble is essentially a vendor interface that will lie between the Android OS framework and the individual manufacturer's software. It eliminates one step from the drill that would help the OEMs to deliver timely updates. They plan to modularise it by separating the OS framework code from "vendor specific" hardware code.

Easily the most annoying aspect of using an Android phone (with the exception of Pixel/Nexus) is slow updates.

The worse news? Google still doesn't have an answer for the other half of the Android fragmentation issue: The wireless carriers that continue to block other updates, including security updates.

With Project Treble, the new Android update can (supposedly) be dropped right on top of the existing vendor implementation, potentially cutting SoC vendors like Qualcomm out of the update process.

It's not clear if this removes all hurdles or if manufacturers will still have to update Android's code to make sure that features specific to their phone are working.

Google is acutely aware of this and believes it has found a way for manufacturers to speed the process up for the forthcoming Android O update. The inspiration behind Project Treble is Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) that will enable developers to write apps that would be compatible with the billion of Android devices.

The new VI will sit in between the Android OS framework and the aforementioned Vendor Implementation. Device makers modify the new release again as needed for their devices.

If you're not familiar with how Android updates work, here's a summary.

According to the Android Developers blog post that announced Project Treble, device manufacturers have complained that rolling out updates to bring smartphones and tablets to the latest version of Android is both costly and time-consuming.

Since time immemorial, the Android ecosystem has made quickly updating an operating system across devices seem like an impossible task.
