North Korea Accuses US of Plotting Kim Assassination

North Korea Accuses US of Plotting Kim Assassination

In a long report by Pyongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was accused on Friday of trying to use biochemical substances to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The statement, carried by North Korean news agency KCNA, said the alleged plot included the use of "biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance".

Pompeo's visit to South Korea included "detailed security discussions" with Seoul intelligence officials and a visit to an island near the border with the North, according to the US military command in Korea.

The agents "ideologically corrupted and bribed a DPRK citizen surnamed Kim" to carry out the attack the statement said, using the initials for North Korea's formal name. The CIA declined to comment and South Korea has issued no statement so far.

FILE - In this Saturday, April 15, 2017, file photo, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un waves during a military parade in Pyongyang, North Korea, to celebrate the 105th birth anniversary of Kim Il Sung, the country's late founder and grandfather of current ruler Kim Jong Un.

North Korean officials said that they only "recently uncovered and smashed" the "heinous crime", but did not give any other details of who was involved or how it was discovered.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong-un's half brother, Kim Jong-nam, was killed with the banned nerve agent VX at Kuala Lumpur worldwide airport.

Tension on the Korean peninsula continues to rise, driven by concern that the Kim Jong-Un regime is planning to conduct the country's sixth nuclear test or test-launch another ballistic missile in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

It said North Korea would find and "mercilessly destroy" the terrorists.

Analysts say such an assassination operation would be extremely hard to plan and carry out given the massive security around the supreme leader.

Pyongyang warned this week that US hostility had brought the region to the brink of nuclear war.

North Korea said that the impact of the attack on the North Korean leader would be not be visible for six to 12 months afterward.

Donald Trump has surely confused North Korea about American intentions.

"Most political people would never say that", Trump said, "but I'm telling you under the right circumstances, I would meet with him".

North Korea warned that USA hostility brought the region to the brink of nuclear war.

The drill was particularly disturbing for South Koreans who remember a failed attempt by North Korean commandos in 1968 to assassinate then dictator Park Chung-hee, the father of Park Geun-hye.
