It's Honda's problem, not mine, says Alonso

It's Honda's problem, not mine, says Alonso

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso said he will be open to offers from rival teams if McLaren continue to struggle next season.

As he participated in an awareness campaign to promote responsible driving, Alonso talked about the improvements introduced by McLaren and hoped they will help the team during the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, after failing to collect any points in the previous four races.

Alonso slipped away from the track and played some paddle tennis to "keep the body active" while mechanics changed out his car's engine before the afternoon session, when he was the last of the 20 drivers to venture out. The F1 race will be held on Sunday.

After suffering an engine failure on the formation lap ahead of the Russian Grand Prix Alonso says Honda's early problems in Barcelona were not a surprise.

"It's not my career", Alonso said. He finished with the afternoon's slowest time, over three seconds behind pacesetter Lewis Hamilton. At least I managed to get some training done - when I heard I had two hours before the next commitment I chose to do just that.

"(It was) really, really bad for us as a team not to start the race.

"I feel confident that tomorrow, when we'll put everything together, we'll be in a more or less competitive position and hopefully we can be close to the others".

The 35-year-old Alonso ranks sixth all-time with 32 wins, but his last victory came at the 2013 Spanish GP while he was with Ferrari.

McLaren-Honda boss Zak Brown said he accepted Fernando Alonso s challenge to give him a race winning auto for next year, and had no concerns at him leaving the circuit to play tennis after another engine failure. Alonso has already chose to try his luck at the Indianapolis 500 instead of the Monaco GP this month. Rumor has it that he could return to Renault, with which he won his two world championships over a decade ago, or that he could take Kimi Raikkonen's place alongside Sebastian Vettel back at Ferrari again.

"Around September I will consider what I will do next year; if it's time to find challenges outside Formula One or if Formula One will give an opportunity to win the championship, which is my main goal".

"I don't know what Mercedes was up to".

"But you then can't cry over spilt milk so quickly you turn your attention to Stoffel's vehicle, and seeing what we learned there".

"Sadness... disappointment... just kind of a state of disbelief", Brown said on his feelings of Alonso's stoppage.
