'Huge' explosion at Damascus airport

'Huge' explosion at Damascus airport

Syrian rebel and intelligence sources are claiming that Israeli air strikes were responsible.

The source said the arms depot gets a major part of the weapons supplied to an array of Iranian-backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against regime opposition groups.

Israeli Minister of Intelligence Yisrael Katz would not comment directly on the incident but said any similar strike would be in line with established policy to interrupt weapons transfers. "Naturally, I don't want to elaborate on this".

"When we receive serious information about the intention to transfer weapons to Hezbollah, we will act".

Hezbollah's al-Manar media station reported an explosion at the fuel tanks and a warehouse next to the airport, which is 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of the city center.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said: "The blast was huge and could be heard in Damascus".

The Israeli Air Force also bombed a nuclear reactor in Syria in 2007, fearing it had a military objective.

Syrian rebel and regional intelligence sources said the strikes targeted weapons that were shipped from Iran on military and commercial cargo planes.

Israel participates in the war in Syria in various forms, which include using weapons against Syrian army positions and directly supporting terrorist groups which fight against government troops, Assad told Venezuelan Telesur broadcaster.

As well as weapons, hundreds of Shi'ite militia fighters from Iraq and Iran have been flown to Damascus worldwide airport.

Russian Federation and Israel were in constant contact about the situation in Syria through various channels, said Peskov.

On 13 January, Syria accused Israel of bombing Mazzeh air base in the western suburbs of the capital.

Israel has annexed the Golan Heights in 1981 following the 1967 Six-Day War with Syria.

The Israeli air force shot down several unmanned aircraft deployed by Hamas and Hezbollah in recent years. Hezbollah fired more than 4,000 rockets on Israel in the 2006 war.

Israel has carried out similar attacks in the past.
