Former Acting US AG Yates Testifies on Michael Flynn Saga

Former Acting US AG Yates Testifies on Michael Flynn Saga

Another member of the Senate committee told CNN that possible collusion "is what we are investigating".

A former US Department of Justice official has testified she had two meetings and one telephone call with White House officials about Michael Flynn when he was President Donald Trump's national security adviser. But it was only 18 days later, after the Yates warning leaked, that the White House pushed Flynn out.

A day earlier former acting Attorney General Sally Yates told a Senate panel that she warned the White House that Flynn was a blackmail risk because of his ties to Russian Federation.

In advance of yesterday's congressional testimony by former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, President Trump tweeted, "General Flynn was given the highest security clearance by the Obama administration".

The White House said Spicer is missing the briefing because he will be at the Pentagon for the remainder of the week on duty with the Navy Reserve, with which he has served for almost two decades.

Yates made clear that the concerns she raised had exclusively to do with Flynn's contacts with the Russian ambassador, and not his paid speech for a Russian state media organization or his lobbying for Turkish interests, two other issues that have brought him law enforcement scrutiny.

She said she had warned him that Mr Flynn had apparently misled the administration about his communications with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador.

"To state the obvious, you don't want your national security adviser compromised by the Russians", Yates said she replied. Her remarks appeared to confirm that Flynn is the target of an FBI investigation.

This puts into context Clapper's March 5 statement that he had seen no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

But Yates declined to answer the same question, saying that her answer would require her to reveal classified information.

NY [U.S.], May10: The timing of the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey coincides with the subpoenas issued to the associates of former national security Advisor Michael Flynn, as part of the ongoing probe of Russian meddling in 2016 election.

Yates was appointed by President Obama as U.S. Attorney in northern Georgia and was later confirmed as Deputy Attorney General.

Yates' warning came almost three weeks before Flynn was finally fired by President Trump.

Spicer said that after the White House first viewed the evidence and materials on February 2, which were first flagged by Yates on January 26, there were various meetings and discussions that took place leading up to the request for Flynn's resignation on February 13.
