Flynn associates subpoenaed in Russia probe

Flynn associates subpoenaed in Russia probe

The Senate Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena Wednesday to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, the committee's top members announced. "The timing and the reasoning incites people to believe that there's something that's being covered up", said the Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). "The committee first requested these documents in an April 28,2017 letter to Lieutenant General Flynn, but he declined, through counsel, to cooperate with the committee's request".

In testimony before the House intelligence committee in March, Comey testified that the FBI was investigating possible collusion between Trump associates and Russian officials and other Russians known to United States intelligence as part of its broader, ongoing counter-intelligence investigation.

Flynn's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the subpoena.

CNN reported Tuesday that grand jury subpoenas have been issued to associates of Flynn by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Va.

The subpoena issued on Wednesday night is the first the committee has announced in the course of its Russian Federation investigation, The Washington Post reported. The White House said he misled vice president Mike Pence and other senior officials about his communications during the presidential transition with Moscow's ambassador to the US.

"With that being said, I'll go along with Russia", Mr. Trump said.

In March, Kelner said in a statement that Flynn had a "story to tell", but said no reasonable person would agree to be questioned by the committee without "assurances against unfair prosecution".

A January report from the US intelligence community concluded that Russian Federation did indeed meddle in the election, but Mr. Trump has been ambivalent on the issue.

Investigators have been looking into possible wrongdoing in how Flynn handled disclosures about payments from clients tied to foreign governments including Russian Federation and Turkey, US officials briefed on the matter have told CNN.
