What Does Retirement Mean for Prince Philip?

What Does Retirement Mean for Prince Philip?

Prince Philip's withdrawal from public life will leave a huge gap to be filled.

Prince Philip has joked about his advanced years at a palace reception hours after officials announced his retirement from public duties from later this year.

"He's been an icon for so long, and I've really admired him and it saddens me in a way", said Grace Marie, who said she understood his decision.

The Duke of Edinburgh has maintained a vigorous public schedule despite suffering from a heart disease and other ailments in recent years.

Prince Philip, or the Duke of Edinburgh, is as synonymous with British royalty as Queen Elizabeth herself.

He will attend previously scheduled engagements until August, and would not accept any new invitations thereafter. They then wrote on twitter, "The Duke of Edinburgh is Patron, President or a member of over 780 organisations, with which he will continue to be associated".

The Duke of Edinburgh described himself as the "world's most experienced plaque-unveiler" as he opened a new stand at Lord's cricket ground.

It is understood the Duke had been thinking about stepping down from public duties in the past few months and made the announcement now as his diary for the autumn would have been finalised during this period.

The pair Wednesday in 1947, five years before she took over as Queen. The couple have four children, of which the eldest, 68-year-old Prince Charles is heir to the throne.

The Queen will continue to carry out her royal duties as usual.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the situation.

A spokesman for The Sun later told the Daily Mail that a reporter had been asked to update an obituary for Prince Philip when it was accidentally published online.

A dozen television news crews headed to Buckingham Palace in the early morning, and the website of one tabloid reported, in an article that was quickly taken down, that the prince had died.

Senior staff members for the royal family were called into an emergency meeting at Buckingham Palace prior to the announcement, sparking speculations that the Queen or Prince Philip's health was declining.
