Mules golf atop the leaderboard at NCAA Super Regional

Mules golf atop the leaderboard at NCAA Super Regional

Toss in one of the hardest courses in the region, a young team, and unseasonably chilly and blustery conditions and it made for a tough first day at the famed Scarlet Course at the Ohio State University Golf Club. No. 9 Texas Tech holds third place at 296 (+8), and No.1 UCLA and No. 7 BYU are tied for fourth place at 297 (+9). The top six teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships and the Badgers are just five strokes back of that all-important placement.

USC, playing on this course for the first time since its 2008 NCAA title, is seeking its 20th straight trip to the NCAA final field while now riding an NCAA-record streak of even straight regional wins.

Amy Lee shot even-par 72 to finish the day tied for 11th place in the 96-player field.

The top six teams from each of four regionals will advance to the nationals later this month in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Individually, sophomore Lauren Stephenson led the Tide on Monday with a 3-under par 69 to tie for second place. Raeysha Surendran had an eagle-two on the par-4 11th hole and posted a 78 to share 61st place with teammate Holmslykke. Freshman Kristen Gillman is tied for 16 at 1-over par (73). After a double bogey, bogey start had him at three-over after two holes, Springer played the final 16 holes at eight-under par including six straight birdies to close out the front nine at three-under. Florida State's seminole hole certainly came on hole No. 14 as senior Lydia Gumm, Morgane Metraux and freshman Amanda Doherty all earned birdies to help the team cement its second place standing and close the gap on Florida. Her round featured a pair of birdies.

Junior Grace Rose entered Monday as Kentucky's hottest golfer after firing a career-best 214 at the SEC Championship, but she got off to a rough start and stands a 10-over par and in a tie for 73rd. Atkinson shot +15 to tie for 93rd on Monday. No MSU player was able to match her season stroke average today. Purdue and Ohio State are tied for third at 14-over. During the round Vu birdied seven-times and bogeyed three-times with her circles coming on Nos.
