2 killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Chicago memorial

First Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro says that the incident was connected to ongoing gang warfare.

Navarro said two masked men carrying assault rifles came out of an alley and open fired on the group at the memorial, killing one man about 25 who was dead on the scene, and a 29-year-old woman who died of her wounds at Stroger Hospital, Eight additional people, a lot of them adults, were taken to area hospitals where their wounds were treated, police officials said.

Information provided by several members of the La Raza street gang helped police to identify a driver and a shooter who they said pulled up alongside two plainclothes officers last Tuesday and opened fire with a military-style rifle, shooting one officer in the arm and hip, the other in the back, the department said. The victims, two of whom died, were attending a memorial for a person shot and killed that day in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the southwest side.

Two people are dead and eight others hurt after suspects opened fire at a memorial for another shooting.

At the scene of the second shooting alone, Guglielmi said that more than two dozen shell casings were recovered, with police believing that there were two people firing the weapons.

No one has been arrested, but police say they have a "good idea" who they are looking for.

Police believe the shooter mistook the officers for rival gang members, Police Cmdr. He called the attack "another brazen act of gang violence" and the third reported rifle shooting in a week, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Cardova, 26, was found shot dead on the street after officers responded to calls of shots fired at around 4:40 a.m. on Sunday. "We have a fairly good idea of the conflict involved, and where we need to be deployed, but right now we're trying to saturate the area, and ensure that nothing else happens tonight and going in to the next couple of days".

The shooting occurred around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 4300 block of S. Ashland Ave.in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Given the very real possibility that the gang war has not played itself out, the department has saturated the same area with officers and tactical teams, Guglielmi said.

The condition of the eight injured people is not yet known, but they have been hospitalised for treatment.

The most prominent domestic violence hotline in the USA says there's been a sharp increase in calls from abuse victims struggling with issues related to their immigration status. Gang members said gangs provided structure their parents did not. Today they're used on gang members in the Brighton Park community.
