Rashid puts Ireland in tailspin as England take 1st ODI

Rashid puts Ireland in tailspin as England take 1st ODI

Eoin Morgan congratulated Adil Rashid on bouncing back from his "tough winter" after the leg-spinner's maiden five-wicket haul set England on the fast track to victory over Ireland.

England needed only 20 overs to reach the winning target at 127-3, propelled by opener Alex Hales' blistering 55 off 39 balls, including 10 boundaries.

Then despite an unconvincing start of their own with the bat, England hurried past an inadequate total in 20 overs to bring an early and chastening conclusion for Ireland to their first worldwide fixture in this country.

Andrew Balbirnie was Ireland's top scorer with 30 runs, while Adil Rashid took five of the Irish wickets. The visitors won the toss and batted but were bowled out for just 126 as they were bamboozled by spin on a dry surface in the West Country. The last two - Niall O'Brien and Tim Murtagh - wrapped up the innings and made this match a virtual no-contest.

England's Rashid had been given the nod as their frontline spinner ahead of Moeen Ali for the first match of the summer and though he will come up against far tougher resistance in the months to come, it was a more-than-handy start for a player who relies hugely on confidence. Then a brace of googlies did for Kevin O'Brien and Stuart Thompson, the former beaten on the inside edge and Thompson, a left-hander, on the outside as he propped forward.

It was a fine performance from Rashid, a bowler who has been in good form in his limited appearances for Yorkshire so far this season, and was further proof of his improvement as an worldwide bowler which was evident, at times, during the winter tours to India and Bangladesh.

"I hope I can now carry it on into the summer". It's come from hard work in the nets and practice, knowing my fields, knowing how you feel on a good day and when you don't feel so good.

From 81 for 2, after Porterfield had chosen to bat first, Ireland lost 8 for 45 to be bundled out with 17 overs unused.

Morgan and Billings had returned from their stints in the Indian Premier League but all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, as well as regular England ODI keeper Jos Buttler had remained with their franchises in the lucrative Twenty20 competition.

But despite the fact spin is not usually the weapon of choice in early-season English conditions, Root started an implosion that altered the course of this match dramatically when he had William Porterfield, the captain, caught at mid-off. And when Rashid had Murtagh caught in the deep, Ireland were all out in a mere 33 overs. A first ever game at the Home of Cricket beckons - there is not much more motivation required.

Rashid had a torrid time in Bangladesh and India but asked if this was the best he had seen the Yorkshireman bowl, Morgan said: "Yes".
