Fitbit gives evidence in murder case

Fitbit gives evidence in murder case

The Dabate home sits partially hidden by trees in Ellington, Conn. Dabate then claimed he used a blowtorch to chase the assailant away.

Richard told investigators his life was "like a frickin' soap opera" when they discovered early in the investigation that he had a pregnant mistress and had been discussing divorce options with his wife. He told authorities he'd driven home in the morning after receiving a notification on his phone, telling him that a panic alarm had been set-off.

A man in CT has been charged with the murder of his wife after her Fitbit contradicted his version of events. Dabate also told officers the attacker torchured him by stabbing him with a sharp object that looked like a box cutter.

Also, police sniffer dogs picked up no scent of other people in the house in the hours before Mrs Dabate's death.

"The intruder then noticed he was in the room, and he (the intruder) pulled out a knife".

He claimed the perpetrator was a "tall, obese man" with a deep voice like actor Vin Diesel's and wearing "camouflage and a mask", according to an arrest warrant. Dabate stated his ears were ringing, and he thought he heard another shot. Allegedly, when his wife arrived, Richard screamed at her to get help.

The shocking crime remained a mystery until last week, when police laid murder charges against Rick Dabate.

The Hartford Courant reported that Dabate, known to have been having an on-again-off-again affair for seven years, had sent a note to his pregnant girlfriend the night before the murder, writing, "I'll see you tomorrow my little love nugget". From the start police noticied inconsistencies in Richard's story. His story kept changing, seemingly becoming more detailed and outlandish with each retelling.

Police-who've charged Dabate with felony murder and other crimes 16 months after the December 23, 2015 murder-say Dabate claimed Connie Dabate was killed around 9am, when she returned home from the gym.

If Richard Dabate's claims were correct, detectives say the total distance it would take the victim to walk from her vehicle to the basement, where she died, would be no more than 125 feet.

Police records also show that Richard used a secret credit card to buy flowers for his lover. This led them to charge Dabate with her murder in mid-April, and he will now stand trial by the end of the month. But his story completely unraveled when police saw Connie Dabate's fitness tracker had her walking around the house almost an hour after her husband told investigators she had been fatally attacked.

Craig Stedman, the CT district attorney, said that using a FitBit to investigate crime was unusual - but that the device could provide solid evidence.

In November 2015 Connie Dabate was murdered in her home.
