Malcolm Butler Most Likely Remaining With Patriots

If the New England Patriots don't trade Malcolm Butler before this week's National Football League draft, the cornerback more than likely will remain with the team for the upcoming season.

The Patriots have spent the offseason making a flurry of aggressive moves, while basically sitting on their hands with cornerback and Super Bowl 49 hero Malcolm Butler.

Attorney George Leontire told reporters early Monday afternoon that a Bristol Superior Court judge in New Bedford, Mass., ordered the release of the notes to the family, the Boston Globe reported. While that price is likely still in the negotiation phase, it would be interesting to see him take that kind of contract after averaging $14 million over the last three seasons in Minnesota.

Butler visited the Saints last month as a restricted free agent.

The Saints didn't plan to sign Butler, 27, to an offer sheet, but at the NFL's annual meetings in March, coach Sean Payton seemed to hint that the club could be interested in a different scenario.

While New Orleans goes old (Peterson is 32) and redundant for a name everyone knows, New England went for its latest ideal situational back. He also impressed the Patriots during a workout there but the team instead signed Bills running back Mike Gillislee.

Peterson became an unrestricted free agent after Minnesota declined to pay a $18 million team option.

Butler will now likely team up with Stephon Gilmore as the two corners in the Patriots secondary. In his three years as a starter, Maye has accumulated 4 interceptions, 17 passes defended, and a ridiculous 7 forced fumbles.

Peterson played just three games last season because of a torn meniscus suffered on September 18.
