United Airlines changes crew flight policy after forcible removal fiasco

Even before United's treatment of Dao, it was ranked low on customer satisfaction compared to other airlines.

Law enforcement officials dragged Dr Dao off a flight departing from Chicago for Louisville, Kentucky, because it was fully booked, and the airline wanted four passengers to make way for staff members.

United has been struggling to contain the fallout from the controversial incident, which has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for congressional hearings.

Days after a passenger was dragged from a flight because United Airlines needed to make room for employees, the airline has changed its policy on transporting workers.

"We issued an updated policy to make sure crews traveling on our aircraft are booked at least 60 minutes prior to departure", Maggie Schmerin, a United spokeswoman, told The Times via email Sunday.

United chief executive Oscar Munoz on Monday again apologised for the incident, and the company said on Friday it was changing its policy on booking its flight crews onto its own planes.

'This is one of our initial steps in a review of our policies'.

A man on board a United flight from Houston to Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, said a scorpion dropped on his head from an overhead storage bin and stung him under his fingernail, according the United and media reports.

"This can never, will never happen again", Munoz said.

It would be illegal for IL state or local government employees to forcibly remove travelers from flights under a bill introduced by a lawmaker on Monday after a United Airlines passenger was violently dragged from an aircraft last week. Dao's removal was necessitated by the need to accommodate extra flight crew members.

Delta Airlines has increased the maximum amount of compensation the airline will offer passengers when reaccommodating travelers on overbooked flights.

This only happened, however, with people who said they'd heard about United recently.

Delta Air Lines has increased the maximum possible payout to passengers to almost $10,000 if they voluntarily give up a seat on an overbooked flight, the company told AFP Monday.
