San Francisco power outage traps people in elevators

San Francisco power outage traps people in elevators

The San Francisco Fire Department says it has responded to more than 100 calls for service since a power outage struck a large area of the city.

Authorities with San Francisco Fire and Police departments has received calls throughout the morning since the outage rolled through the city at about 9 a.m. PG&E said crews are now working to restore power as soon as they can. Pacific Gas & Electric said it expected to restore power to remaining customers by late afternoon. PG&E crews, working with the San Francisco Fire Department, responded quickly to the scene and safely extinguished the fire.

He was not the first official source trying to narrow down the cause of the outage, as similar events reportedly took place in other US cities on Friday.

A wide area of San Francisco has been hit by a power outage.

There was an insulation fire at a PG&E substation located on Larkin and Eddy streets, but authorities have not confirmed whether it's the reason 1 in 10 San Francisco residents have been without power since around 9 a.m., according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The SFMTA said in a tweet that people should treat intersections as four-way stops due to "scattered" power outages citywide.

Pacific Gas & Electric crews were assessing the problem and there was no immediate estimate for restoration of electricity. Power had been restored to 23,000 homes and businesses as of 2 p.m. local time and most were expected to have the lights back on by 6 p.m., Liebelt said.

However, no injuries related to the blackout were reported.

Meanwhile, the Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in the Nob Hill neighborhood was forced to cancel all non-essential appointments and procedures, a spokeswoman said.

Mon Alicia took to twitter to comment: "I always thought The Big One would throw San Francisco into mass chaos". But many people seemed to take the outage in stride, leaving offices or apartments to socialize on streets where traffic was more subdued than on typical work days.

AP reporters Kristin J. Bender, Jocelyn Gecker and Juliet Williams contributed to this story in San Francisco and John Antczak and Amanda Lee Myers from Los Angeles.
