Samsung heads for best quarterly profit in over 3 yrs, up 48%

The global memory-chip leader said first-quarter operating profit was likely 9.9 trillion won (S$12.2 billion), compared with an average forecast of 9.4 trillion won from a Thomson Reuters survey.

It was only a few weeks ago that Samsung confirmed the ongoing rumors that it would release the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 on the world once again as a refurbished device. Revenue rose 0.4 per cent to 50 trillion won, just ahead of analysts' forecasts.

Samsung shares touched a record high of 2.134 million won in late March on expectations of record earnings in 2017, as limited production capacity for the memory chip industry and growing demand for more firepower from devices such as smartphones and servers push up margins.

The good news for Samsung comes even in the wake of the explosive Galaxy Note 7 handsets and a political bribery and corruption scandal which is now on-going in South Korea. The prosecution is trying to determine whether the donations were given as bribes in exchange for government support for the company's bid to enter the lucrative duty-free business. Sales of its new G6 flagship smartphone began in March and will not provide meaningful contributions until the second quarter.

The long and short of it is, those folks in emerging markets will probably be getting an incredible phone, with newer software and a battery that won't explode in their faces.

The South Korean firm's Galaxy Note 7 smartphone was plagued with problems.

Like the rest of the Galaxy C series, the newly launched Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro comes in with an impressive all-metal design that has become characteristic of the South Korean company's midrange phones.

Lee's arrest, the first for a Samsung chief even though his father was twice convicted of bribery, sent shockwaves through the company and triggered the announcement of a major reform of its top-down management style. He and Samsung have denied wrongdoing.

The court is expected to deliver a verdict by the end of May.
