Rangers release Josh Hamilton from minor-league contract

Rangers release Josh Hamilton from minor-league contract

The Texas Rangers released Josh Hamilton from his minor league contract Friday after another knee injury, perhaps signalling the end of the 2010 AL MVP's career.

In May, Hamilton will be 36 and underwent surgery last June on his knee and left the Rangers during spring training to have another procedure due to experiencing soreness in the knee.

His release comes after he injured his right knee during rehab.

It will be his fourth knee surgery since he last played in a regular season game, in 2015.

Hamilton, the 2010 American League Most Valuable Player with the Rangers, has a.290 career batting average with 200 home runs and 701 runs batted in in 1,027 games with the Cincinnati Reds, Rangers and Los Angeles Angels.

"I want to thank the Rangers and all the great fans for the support and encouragement".

While general manager Jon Daniels said he wasn't sure on details of the upcoming surgery, he said it was significant and that Hamilton wouldn't be able to play this season.

The latest injury calls into question whether or not Hamilton can once again rebound from surgery and return to competitive play.

The left-handed slugger joined the Rangers in an offseason trade, starting his five-year All-Star run in 2008. He was reassigned to the minor leagues on March 20, shortly before the start of the 2017 regular season.

If Hamilton's career comes to an end indeed, he will be 28 days short of completing a 10-year spell in the big leagues, which is needed in order to be qualified for a full pension, as well as being eligible to become a member of the Hall of Fame.

This is the final season of the $125 million, five-year deal he signed with the Angels as a free agent before the 2013 season, though they traded him back to Texas two years later. In nine Major League Baseball seasons, Hamilton owns a.290 batting average, 200 home runs, 701 RBIs, 609 runs and 50 stolen bases.
