North Korea Rolls Out Missiles During Founder's Birthday Celebrations

South Korea says North Korea fires unidentified missile but test fails Video Watch: Kim Jong Un presides over enormous military parade Sideswipe: April 3: Too much to ask? .

U.S. Pacific Command said the ballistic missile, of a kind not yet determined, was launched from near a submarine base at Sinpo, a port city on North Korea's east coast. The U.S. Pacific Command said the missile blew up nearly immediately and that its type was still being assessed.

North Korea warned the United States to end its "military hysteria" earlier on Saturday or face retaliation as a U.S. aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region.

During a speech at the parade, a high-ranking North Korean official blamed the Trump administration for heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, saying North Korea will respond with "all-out war and a nuclear war" if attacked.

North Korea's goal is to build a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of striking the United States. This year Kim Jong Un indicated that his nation is in the final testing phase of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could potentially hit the USA mainland.

Kim Jong-un was greeted with thunderous - and extensively practised - applause as he stepped into view on a large podium on Saturday, clapping to acknowledge the thousands of soldiers and civilians taking part in the parade at Kim Il-sung Square.

A USA attack on a Syrian airfield this month raised questions about President Donald Trump's plans for reclusive North Korea, which has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations and unilateral sanctions.

US officials say the Trump administration's emphasis will be on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China.

North Korea is ratcheting up already high tensions with a new display of military firepower, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports.

North Korea paraded its military might Saturday in a massive public display that experts said showed new capabilities for its long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

While Pyongyang seems to have backed down to USA military pressure for now, it is likely only a temporary pause.

Choe Ryong Hae, a close aide to Kim, addressed the packed square and reiterated the warning to the United States.

North Korea is working to develop a nuclear missile that can strike the United States.

Recently North Korea condemned the USA strike on a Syrian airfield as "an unforgivable act of aggression" and justified its nuclear weapons developments as "the right choice a million times over" because of it.

Trump has also been pressing China to do more to rein in North Korea, and has held out the offer of better trade terms for halting Pyongyang's nuclear program.

North Korea is under United Nations sanctions over its weapons programmes but has long wanted a rocket capable reaching the USA mainland. China's customs department issued an order on April 7 telling traders to return North Korean coal cargoes, said trading sources with knowledge of the order.
