Diet drinks liked to stroke and dementia

Diet drinks liked to stroke and dementia

The study "found that those who reported consuming at least one artificially sweetened drink a day, compared to less than one a week, were 2.96 times as likely to have an ischemic stroke, caused by blood vessel blockage, and 2.89 times as likely to be diagnosed with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease", said a summary from the AHA. The results, however, come with a host of caution flags raised by experts. Then from 2001 to 2011, the people who drank one artificially sweetened drink per day in that period were found to be nearly three times as likely to have an ischemic stroke or be diagnosed with dementia, compared to those who never drank such beverages. "In our study, 3 percent of the people had a new stroke and 5 percent developed dementia, so we're still talking about a small number of people developing stroke or dementia".

Those in the stroke arm of the study were over the age of 45, while those in the dementia arm were over 60.

Washington D.C. [USA], April 21: Watch it before you gulp that fizzy drink or sugary beverage as a study reveals that people who drink diet soda daily are three times more likely to develop stroke and dementia. These patients were also three times more likely to develop Alzheimer's.

The study looked at data from more than 4,300 people over ten years, and while the link between fizzy drinks and dementia was less statistically significant, the risk of stroke remained high.

"So, it was not surprising to see that diet soda intake was associated with stroke and dementia".

However, Pase admits that that overall risk isn't that big. The authors called the findings "striking" because they were found in a middle-aged sample and withstood statistical adjustment for such factors as physical activity and total caloric intake.

That includes low-calorie sweeteners, such as aspartame.

"While we respect the mission of these organizations to help prevent conditions like stroke and dementia, the authors of this study acknowledge that their conclusions do not - and can not - prove cause and effect. NIH does not mention zero calorie sweeteners as a risk factor".

However, brain researchers are encouraged the report could alter lifestyle choices by consumers.

The Stroke study, meanwhile, found an association with artificially sweetened beverages and stroke and dementia, while not finding a similar association for consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, an observation the authors characterized as "intriguing". Those who drank at least one diet soda a day had smaller brain volume, according to an article by Boston University.

Sacco was a co-author of an editorial published alongside the study in the journal Stroke on Thursday. "Absolutely the message is not to switch to sugary drinks". "Artificial sweeteners may have effects in the body that we haven't begun to explore". However, even after excluding diabetics from the study, diet soda consumption was still associated with the risk of dementia.

"We know that limiting added sugars is an important strategy to support good nutrition and healthy body weights, and until we know more, people should use artificially sweetened drinks cautiously", said Johnson.

The team did not ask people which artificial sweetener they used.

"A lot of people assume they must be healthy choices because they are not sugared beverages, but the critical thing for people to understand is we don't have the evidence", Prof Susan Swithers, from the US's Purdue University told the BBC.
