Terrorists Celebrating US Strikes In Syria, Says Hassan Rouhani

But as lawmakers called on Trump to consult with Congress on any future military strikes and a longer-term strategy on Syria, Trump administration officials sent mixed signals on the scope of USA involvement.

Just days before the chemical attack, US envoy to the U.N. Nikki Haley and Tillerson both had indicated that removing Assad from power was no longer a USA priority. "They did this for moral reasons in light of the hard scenes from Idlib and also to make it clear that there is a price for using chemical weapons".

The bombing represents Trump's most dramatic military order since taking office, and thrusts the United States administration deeper into the complex Syrian conflict.

Critics claim Trump's impulsiveness is the main driver for the strikes, saying the move contradicts the new administration's "America First" agenda.

Although it appears the airfield is probably no longer be operable, the regime still has many options for bombing opposition areas.

"If Russia wants to be absolved of responsibility for future attacks, Vladimir Putin needs to enforce commitments, to dismantle Assad's chemical weapons arsenal for good, and to get fully engaged with the United Nations peacekeeping process", he wrote.

McMaster also made clear that Trump wants a world-wide response to Assad's action that would include Russian Federation and Iran. But he said Trump now needed to work with Congress to set a future course. "But they're not disconnected from Bashar Assad and the Al Qaeda - the war crimes that have been taking place". He has shown callous disregard for the lives of innocent civilians over the six years of the Syrian conflict. At that meeting, Haley defended Trump's decision to go ahead with the strike in Syria, which targeted an airbase the Assad regime used to dispatch chemical weapons.

"Just a one-time deal is not going to be productive", he continued.

Still, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) said he believed that Trump didn't need to consult with Congress.

"I think that is the conversation that he [President Trump] will be having and has started to have, going forward", Haley said. But the chemical attack changed his view on the situation, he said, as haunting images of harmed children shocked the world. "There's an agreement with him not to use chemical weapons".

Tillerson spoke days before he will make the Trump administration's first official trip to Russian Federation, a staunch Assad ally.

However, the Russian Defense Ministry insisted that the US authorities have presented "no evidence whatsoever" to back up their accusations against Assad's government.

It was later announced that Russia, Iran and Hezbollah would increase their support for the Syrian military after the USA fired 59 cruise missiles at the airbase from which it believes the gas attack was launched.

According to Syrian state media, seven people, including four children, were killed in the USA air strikes.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said defeating Islamic State was a higher priority than persuading Assad to step down.
