National Security Obtained FISA Warrant To Monitor Former Trump Adviser Carter Page

WaPo, Citing law enforcement and other US officials reported that the warrant for Page was obtained last summer by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

The accusations of collusion between Page and Russian Federation have been denied publically many times.

Trump identified Page as a foreign policy adviser in the spring of 2016 to the Post, but campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks later told the paper that Page had an "informal" role.

Page, an energy consultant who runs the Manhattan-based firm Global Energy Capital, was brought on to the campaign in March as a foreign policy adviser. "I have nothing to hide", The Post quoted Page as saying. The application for the warrant said Page had contact with a known Russian foreign intelligence operative in 2013, and he has had further contact with other known Russian agents since then.

CNN and the New York Times have reported that there were frequent contacts between Trump associates and Russian operatives during the campaign.

Allegations came to light in November that Federal Bureau of Investigation counter-intelligence officials had enough evidence to convince the FISA court to allow them to keep watch on a server believed to be communicating with Russian officials.

Trump and his top advisers accept the intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation tried to interfere in the 2016 election, Stephanopoulos said, but Page replied he didn't have inside information about what had happened.

"Any information I could give is, again, immaterial and all public information", he said during a break in a NY energy conference.

Former Donald Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page Thursday denied suggesting during a trip to Russian Federation last summer that the president would be open to easing sanctions, but then admitted that he did not "recall every single word" that he had said during his visit.

The 90-day warrant has been renewed a few times since it was issued, officials told the Post. Trump officials insist any suggestion they colluded with Moscow is false and politically motivated, although the FBI investigation and a separate congressional probe have continued to draw headlines.

"I never gave him any information which is material or classified or in any way improper", Page said. However, after the school cited his role in the Trump campaign saying he was advertising for him in the speech, Page's alleged ties to Russian Federation came under scrutiny.

The government has not formally charged Page with any wrongdoing, and it is unclear if the Justice Department plans to do so.

The warrant was granted as the FBI conducted a counter-intelligence investigation into Russian interference in the election, an operation that U.S. intelligence later concluded was ultimately created to help Mr Trump to victory.

Page also said he spoke to no Russian officials when he was there last summer. Page said he was in Moscow on a visit to meet with businessmen and politicians.
