Nintendo SNES Classic May Be Coming This Year

Nintendo SNES Classic May Be Coming This Year

To the bafflement of many, Nintendo recently announced that it was ceasing production of the NES Classic Edition, a mini console that has been a sell-out since its introduction six months ago. Though, if the report is true, you'll have to wait until the holidays.

Should territorial distinctions continue, it could be called a Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Europe, or a Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom in Japan, according to the console's original naming conventions.

The company stated last Thursday that the NES Classic was sold as a cool novelty item for holidays and not a permanent product. Let's just hope that Nintendo makes sure there's plenty of stock to go around this time. We can nearly forgive Nintendo for underestimating the demand of the NES Classic Edition, but there is no excuse for a repeat disappointment (for gamers) this time around. Thus far, Nintendo hasn't given an exact reason for this decision, only saying that the NES Classic was never meant to be a long-running product.

Nintendo (ntdoy) made a splash in November with the release of its NES Classic Edition, a slimmed-down version of the company's first home console.

The NES Classic has been very hard to find in stores and online since its reemergence in November a year ago.

Nintendo said it sold more than 1.5 million NES Classic consoles, a figure that was sharply higher than expected. There is no word yet what games will be on this new mini or if it will correct the same issues the NES mini had.

There's no word on which games will be included, but you can bet it would feature classic third-party entries such as Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and A Link To The Past. This report follows on from news yesterday, which discovered that the Japanese company would be discontinuing manufacture of their highly popular NES Mini. The SNES had one of the most rich libraries of any console in history.

Luckily, those who didn't score a mini NES haven't lost all luck.
