Apple gets permit to test self-driving cars

Though no specific start date is known at this time, Apple soon will begin testing its autonomous tech in three 2015 Lexus RF450h SUVs, according to Bloomberg. Hopefully, Apple won't be one of them but, rather, be one of those companies that will push forward its technology in public, letting people see how close they are (or how far they are, as the case may be) to fully autonomous cars of the future. While other companies working on self-driving technology have shared their plans, Apple has remained silent about its project for self-driving vehicles.

According to USA Today, Apple has been rumored to have aspirations of working on driverless vehicle technology for quite a while now.

The original vision of building a whole "Apple Car" may have been diluted by the realities of actually engineering the hardware, which arguably falls well outside Apple's design expertise in consumer technology. Apple has remained secretive about its self-driving project. Neil Cybart, from Above Avalon site said, "Apple is working on a transportation platform Instead of selling cars". But sometimes Apple can't control everything.

So software only or the full monty?

Late a year ago, Apple submitted a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in which it said that it was "investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation".

If there was any remaining doubt about whether Apple Inc.is truly looking to enter the auto market, it was all but dispelled last week.

The disagreement among Apple watchers might just be a reflection of disagreement on the issue within Apple. Project Titan, as the initiative is commonly referred to, reportedly employed about 1,000 employees at the time of the move.
