Tesla's most economical drive, the Model S, just became more affordable

Tesla's most economical drive, the Model S, just became more affordable

That brings the price of the vehicle down to $69,500, which - with features like an all glass roof and automatic rear power liftgate now standard - makes for a pretty good deal if you're in the market for a Tesla but don't want to shell out for a more expensive model.

That might be upsetting to buyers who just ordered the 60kWh model for $68K (now discontinued), but Tesla has also dropped the price of upgrading to a 75kWh battery from $9K to $2K. The all-glass roof, formerly a $1,500 option, is now included as standard equipment along with an automatic power liftgate on all Model S sedans. Now that it's no longer being offered, Tesla is making some pricing and feature changes to the rest of its lineup. This is probably the best time to associate yourself with a Tesla with an entry-price vehicle, as the patience has finally paid off.

Tesla reduced prices for the next-higher versions - both with 90-kwh batteries and AWD - to $88,700 for the Model S 90D and $94,700 for the Model X 90D, according to the automaker's website. The highest-performance Model S P100D will cost $141,200 (up $5,500), while the Model X P100D will cost $146,200 (up $9,500). Now that the Model S is available with a minimum 75kWh pack, that matches up nicely with the maximum pack size of the Model 3, which Elon Musk recently told us would be 75kWh when the vehicle is released. The Model S with the 75 kWh battery, for instance, has significantly more range than the 60 kWh one did.

Tesla has also made some other changes. The options have apparently been streamlined ahead of the final unveiling of the $35,000 Model 3 which will be properly revealed in July.

"Periodically we have adjusted pricing and available options to best reflect the value of our products and our customers' preferences".

Tesla could use a boost to Model S demand for several reasons. The cheapest Model X, meanwhile, starts at $83,700 for the 75D. We expect our total average selling price to remain nearly exactly the same. The Model S 100D will jump to $97,500 from $95,000, and the Model S P100D increases to $140,000 from $134,500.

If these new price drops entice you to order a Model S, you can use our referral code to save another $1,000 - bringing the base price of the Model S to $68,500.
