Major League Baseball players remember Jackie Robinson on Twitter

Robinson, a Pasadena native, made baseball history when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in April, 1947. All players wore the No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. "Jackie Robinson showed us you can stand up, be strong and be respected, and play great ball under tremendous pressure". That's my number!' " Maybin said. "I thought everyone had free speech". The tradition continues Saturday on the 70th anniversary of the monumental moment. It was a big day for baseball, American history, and Cairo, Georgia. "But he's somebody we in the African-American community celebrate every day".

The foundation focuses on a "commitment to equal opportunity by addressing the achievement gap in higher education", according to its website. The statue depicts Robinson sliding into home plate during his rookie season.

Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson, left, and wife, Cookie, pose with a bronze statue of Jackie Robinson outside Dodger Stadium before the team's baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Los Angeles.

After 55 years, Dodger Stadium has a statue. Similarly, those qualities were required of anyone breaking the color line. Also on hand was Robinson's 94-year-old widow, Rachel, as well as two of the couple's children, Sharon and David.

"She's really led the charge on the legacy building", Sharon Robinson said. And I think that's just such a cool thing.

Fittingly, Jackie Robinson is the first to be honored with a statue at Dodger Stadium.

Just for the sake of comparison, Staples Center, which opened in 1999, last month welcomed its eighth statue, a dunking Shaquille O'Neal.

All told, Jackie Robinson Day has become one of the most important dates on the Major League Baseball calendar.

Robinson attended UCLA from 1939-41 and was a four-sport athlete in baseball, track and field, basketball and football.

My family watched every movie there was about Jackie Robinson. "As an African-American, their actions and choices in life have an impact on my life".

Cadet's work is so impressive that this statue actually speaks. "And in this quiet atmosphere in the clubhouse, Gene suddenly says 'I've got it!'" He said, 'We'll all wear No. 42 and they'll never know which one is Jackie Robinson".

But Robinson's impact goes far beyond his stats. Campanis also tutored Robinson on how to protect himself when opposing players tried to spike him, which happened more often because he was black.
