'Fate of the Furious' To Set Global Debut Record (CMCSA)

'Fate of the Furious' To Set Global Debut Record (CMCSA)

The eighth "Fast and Furious" opened to $432.3 million internationally, destroying the foreign opening record of $316.7 million set by Universal's "Jurassic World" in 2015.

Charlize Theron and Vin Diesel in The Fate of the Furious.

Based on the huge disparity between this installment's opening numbers and "Furious 7's", American fans seemingly have become disinterested with the franchise. With North American sales added in, the estimated $532.5 million global debut would break the record of $529 million held by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", website BoxOfficeMojo.com reported. "Furious 7" served as a memorial of sorts to Paul Walker, the franchise star whose 2013 death in a vehicle accident shattered his co-stars and many fans. Although the official figures don't come out until Monday morning, "The Fate of the Furious" appears to be on track to best "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which now holds the record at $529 million following its 2015 release.

"The Fate of the Furious" has numerous returning stars like Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese and Ludacris, but has added some new elements behind the camera in director F. Gary Gray and in front of the camera with Charlize Theron.

Universal didn't provide a budget, but sources peg the cost at $250 million, making it the most expensive chapter in the series.

Back in the Top 10, Fox and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby placed #2 with $15.5 million for a domestic take of $116.5-M and worldwide box office of $287.6-M. Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" nabbed third, taking in $13.6 million to push its stateside haul to a mighty $454.7 million.

New Line and Village Roadshow's Going in Style earned $6.4-M in its 2nd frame for a domestic take of $23.4-M and $35.1-M at the worldwide box office.

The Warner Bros. comedy, starring Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine as aging bank robbers, had weekend sales of US$6.3 million.

Most studios steered clear of "The Fate of the Furious", but there were a few fearless newcomers opening in limited release.
