Health officials cite 5 new measles cases in Hennepin County

This new case of measles is related to that first case. Anyone who was at the two restaurants should monitor themselves for rash, fever or other symptoms of the highly communicable disease for the next 21 days.

The health department said the issue is not one of food safety or restaurant sanitation.

From Jan. 1 to March 25 of this year, 28 people from 10 states that didn't yet include Minnesota were reported to have measles, the CDC says.

Measles is a viral infection that can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation or death. It also can cause miscarriages or premature delivery in pregnant women. Measles virus spreads through the air through coughing and sneezing. Rather, the person with measles was a customer at the two restaurants while contagious. The illness starts with a high fever, runny nose, cough and reddened light-sensitive eyes, followed by a red, raised body rash that starts on the head and face until progressing to the rest of the body.

This increases the possibity of exposing others to the infectino.

MDHSS said vaccinations are the best way to prevent measles.

Seven of the confirmed cases are Somali Minnesotans, according to MDH Infectious Disease Division Director Kris Ehresmann.

"Hopefully none of the people who have been potentially exposed to this would catch the measles", he said.

Last year, MI had one case of measles.

The MDHHS said measles was eliminated from the United States in 2000, but emerges every year among worldwide travelers, where it remains a common illness. But in recent years there have been more, which is of great concern to public health authorities. In 2014, 667 people in the USA contracted measles, including five people in MI.

Most people in Minnesota are immune to measles either from having been vaccinated or from having had the disease. The MDHHS says that the best line of defense against measles is vaccination. The first of two doses is given at 12 months, but children who are traveling internationally should receive their first measles vaccine as young as 6 months, according to the release. A majority of those cases involved people who were not vaccinated.

You can find a fact sheet about measles on the WCPH website, and more information on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
