Trump aides differ over Assad's future after Syria attack

Trump aides differ over Assad's future after Syria attack

Some 87 people, including children, are believed to have been killed in a suspected sarin nerve agent strike on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun.

On Sunday, U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said President Donald Trump has asked officials to give him options for removing the threat of a nuclear-armed North Korea. Still, Haley said the USA didn't see a peaceful future for Syria with Assad in power.

"It's very hard to understand how a political solution could result from the continuation of the Assad regime", McMaster said.

Not so fast. Speaking to ABC's This Week, Tillerson emphasized there was "no change" in the USA military stance toward Syria.

Top diplomats from the seven major advanced economies are in Italy for their annual two-day meeting which had initially been expected to focus on intimate talks with new US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson about hotspots like Libya, Iran and Ukraine. "It's important that we keep our priorities straight". After years of calling for al-Assad's removal during former president Barack Obama's tenure, Washington appeared to be stepping back from seeking regime change in Syria in recent weeks.

"We do not have any information that suggests that Russian Federation was part of the military attack undertaken using the chemical weapons", Tillerson said. "How can they with a straight face cover for Assad, because if they're covering for Assad, then what are they really saying?". The conflict broke out right after Trump authorized the firing of 59 cruise missiles at a military airfield.

Russian Federation continues to back the Assad regime and denies the Syrian leader gassed his own people.

The US strike Thursday was created to be a targeted mission on the airfield from where the deadly chemical attack was launched Tuesday. Asked whether she thought Russian Federation was trying to help Assad cover up the use of chemical weapons, Haley said either Moscow knew Assad had weapons that would be used or they were "played for fools by Assad and kept in the dark".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom monitoring group, told Newsweekthat the attack had been carried out either by Russian Federation or by President Bashar Assad's regime.

He said allegations that al-Assad's regime was behind a chemical weapons attack were "baseless" and suggested it was carried out by rebel groups to influence global public opinion.

A South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman said Monday the deployment of the Carl Vinson to the Western Pacific region was in response to the "serious situation on the Korean Peninsula".

"Every time Assad has crossed the line of human decency, Russian Federation has stood beside him", Haley told the council.

By 51 to 40 percent, more support than oppose the missile strikes launched early Friday on the Shayrat air base in Syria, with opinions dividing sharply along partisan lines.

"From now on we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is and America knows our ability to respond well", said the statement published by the group on media outlet Ilam al Harbi (War Media).

Blitzer mentioned that the USA military also shared an image of a radar track of a Syrian airplane from the Shayrat airfield flying to the purported chemical strike area Tuesday.
