Google blocks invasive Burger King ad

Google blocks invasive Burger King ad

A new Burger King ad is too short to really sell you anything on its own, so it's hoping for an assist from your Google Home device.

Google Home, if placed close to the TV, will light up and rattle off a Wikipedia definition of what is in the 100% beef Whopper.

However, there were complaints from some Google Home users in March after the device appeared to start promoting Disney's live-action remake of its musical Beauty & the Beast.

The camera then zooms into the actor, who says, "OK, Google, what is the Whopper burger?" So, they've chose to have your Google Home, or other Google device do most of the work and advertise for them.

If you did decide to have Home or Assistant hear the end of the ad, it would have stated the first lines from the Whopper entry on Wikipedia.

Both the Google Home speakers and those cell phones that have the Google app's voice-activated function active are constantly listening for the phrase "OK Google". Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo devices and Samsung Electronics Co.'s smart televisions have faced criticism from privacy groups over the extent of the conversations and data that they track.

We've reached out to Google for confirmation of the action, which was likely just a quick fix on the server side created to block a specific waveform, perhaps leveraging similar functionality to block out its own ads.

But Burger King's hijacking introduces a new concept - an outsider controlling your assistant from the TV.

"With the onset of consumers buying intelligent system devices and using them at home, we thought this was a good way to make a connection and go directly to guests and tell a story about our product", José Cil, president of Burger King, told The New York Times. So, it's up to our friendly Burger King employee to get crafty when it comes to explaining the Whopper.

While a normal human being can still ask their Google Home about the burger, the audio from the ad itself no longer triggers the devices, BuzzFeed News tests have found. The Verge first reported on the change. Google said it was not a movie ad and quickly removed it.

"I think it's going to backfire if it keeps happening", he said.

How badly do you want this stunning Galaxy Note 8 concept to be real? They have, however, apparently taken steps in their own advertising to prevent user's devices from waking up from their commercials.
