Let's talk about depression

Depression is ranked by World Health Organization as the single largest contributor to global morbidity and the estimated number of people living with depression increased by 18.4 per cent between 2005 and 2015.

The report, which was released in anticipation of World Health Day on April 7, is part of the WHO's "Depression: let's talk" campaign.

Researchers from The University of Queensland have provided key statistics which will support April 7's World Health Day theme - depression and common mental disorders.

Friday is World Health Day and Illawarra home grown national not-for-profit health fund Peoplecare is on organisation that will be marking the day.

According to the WHO, depression is the leading cause of ill health disability worldwide and affects more than 300 million people, yet funding to support causes and treatments for the condition are surprisingly lacking.

"Depression is a disorder which causes a person to feel sad for a long time, fatigue, lack of energy, and can even impact one's ability to carry out daily tasks". Depression can lead to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death in 15 - 29-year- olds globally.

Dr. Nguyen Doan Phuong, Head of the Institute of Mental Health under the Hanoi-based Bach Mai Hospital, said at a recent seminar on the issue that more Vietnamese people, particularly young people, are suffering from depression.

We need to identify ways to prevent depression crossing generations by providing effective approaches for families and in schools. In poorer countries, fewer than 10% of people with depression may receive adequate treatment. Many people are unable to seek help because of the stigmas attached to the disorder.

Considering the rising cases of depression nowadays, there is a need for people to be aware that depression occurs not due to a person's weakness, but because of imbalances in the brain chemistry.

"Seeking help by talking with trusted people can be a first step towards recovery, " the director said. At its most severe, depression can lead to suicide.

"I created an online group called Mental Health Matters".

"Depression is more common amongst the women - 5.1 percent versus 3.6 percent amongst men", said Saxena.

Even in high-income countries, almost 50 percent of people who suffer from depression do not get treatment. All of us can play a role in helping to tackle depression.

In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) the writer and illustrator Matthew Johnstone tells the story of overcoming the "black dog of depression".
