Facebook, Mozilla Launch Fund to Fight Fake News (FB, GOOG)

Formidable names in the tech world, including Facebook, Mozilla, along with other industry leaders, nonprofit organizations, and the City University of NY banded together to launch a $14 million effort to bolster news literacy in today's age.

The Initiative will be run as an independent project by CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism and housed therein.

Campbell Brown, the recently appointed head of news partnerships for Facebook, said in a statement the News Integrity initiative is meant to "give people the tools necessary to be discerning about the information they see online". Additional founding funders include AppNexus, Betaworks, Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, Democracy Fund, Ford Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Mozilla, and the Tow Foundation.

In Europe, the social media group teamed up with Google, BuzzFeed and others to fight against fake news in France ahead of the presidential election in April, as part of Crosscheck, an industry coalition that helps the public gauge the truthfulness of online media. Funds would be allocated to applied research and projects, along with facilitating meetings with industry experts.

Early participants who will host events around the world and recommend projects and research for potential funding.

The social network company, along with a plethora of other organizations, will fund the News Integrity Initiative whose focus will be on news literacy and increasing trust in journalism. At that time Mark Zuckerberg was reported as saying "Personally I think the idea that fake news on Facebook, of which it's a very small amount of the content, influenced the election in any way is a pretty insane idea", according to Variety. BuzzFeed News concluded that fake clickbait headlines drew more readers than real articles during the last three months of campaign coverage.

Newmark's canned statement has him saying "As a news consumer, like most folks, I want news we can trust".

Facebook has previously said it is not responsible for the content on its site.

The initiative comes after Facebook in January launched its "Journalism Project", aimed at establishing stronger ties with the media. In December, it said it would start flagging fake news and would hire fact checkers and its users to detect false news reports.
