Air Force: Pilot ejects safely before F-16 crashes near DC

An Air Force F-16C crashed Wednesday morning near Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, officials confirmed to Air Force Times.

A military fighter jet that left Joint Base Andrews crashed about six miles southwest of the base, officials say.

The fuel tanks and main wreckage of the aircraft have been located and there is no threat to the public, according to Air Force Lt. Col. Lisa Mabutt, who is responsible for emergency response at Andrews.

Video on the Prince George's County Fire Department Twitter feed showed that the plane had gone down in a wooded area.

Homes near the scene are being evacuated as a precaution due to the possibility of hazardous materials, Mark Brady of Prince George's County Fire & EMS said.

No casualties have been reported. He says there are no other reports of injuries and didn't know whether anything on the ground was hit.

The pilot is said to have non-life threatening injuries.

Multiple reports say the plane was an F-15, though it was originally believed to be an F-16. The Navy said a rare dual-engine malfunction caused the crash.

The plane went down near Temple Hills Road and Woodelves Way in Clinton, Brady said.

Crystal Hollingsworth lives nearby and said she heard a "huge crash" followed by the sound of "live rounds". Then, they saw a plume of black smoke and smelled a fire.
