New Jersey Transit train derails at Penn Station, 26 trains canceled

New Jersey Transit train derails at Penn Station, 26 trains canceled

A commuter train derailed at New York's Penn Station today, lightly injuring four people in the second such incident in 10 days, officials said.

The NJ Transit train derailed on Track 9 around 9 a.m., officials said. The Fire Department of NY said there were no immediate reports of injuries.

After suspending trains into and out of Penn Station, NJ Transit restored limited service into and out of the Manhattan hub.

Officials said it took almost two hours to get people off the train on Monday - which fire officials blamed on cars and doors being misaligned after the trains "pinched" up on one another - officials said. Its Empire Service, however, is now unaffected.

Tickets were being cross-honored system-wide among NJ Transit buses, private carriers and PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York, as well as the New York Waterway.

A New Jersey Transit train derailed in Penn Station Monday.

The LIRR said the cancellations are necessary to allow NJ Transit and Amtrak the exclusive use of Tracks 13 to 16, which are typically shared with the LIRR.

No injuries have been reported. Officials with the Federal Railroad Administration also were investigating.
