3 dead after boiler explodes, crashes through St. Louis building

Three people are dead after an explosion at a box manufacturer near the Soulard Neighborhood on Monday morning, according to St. Louis Fire Department.

Emergency crews responded to the Loy-Lange Box Company on Russell Boulevard shortly before 8 a.m., the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Mark Spence, Faultless Healthcare Linen's chief operating officer, said in a statement that that company "immediately will be giving what practical help we can to our employees and their families".

Four people were taken to hospitals for treatment, including two in critical condition, Jenkerson said.

The mayor's director of communications described the piece of the boiler as "van-sized".

"Part of the boiler left the Loy-Lange Box building, went through the roof".

There are large holes in the roof of both the Loy-Lange, and Faultless Linen facilities, Jenkerson says a third building, Pioneer Industrial at 400 Russell Blvd., also sustained damages. At this time, the extent of the injuries and the names of those injured or killed have not been released.

Jenkerson said the explosion appears to be an accident, and an investigation is ongoing.

The fire chief said the boiler was still smoldering about 15 minutes after the call.

The blast inside of Loy-Lange killed one person, Jenkerson says.

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. Monday near at Loy-Lange Box Company, according to Fox News.

And in February 2014, the company paid $2,450 for defective energy control procedures, such as not properly training employees to ensure machinery was turned off and powered down.

KMOX will update this story as more information becomes available.
