Pakistan bowler Mohammad Irfan suspended for a year in spot-fixing charges

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has been suspended for a year and fined 1 million rupees ($9,500,00) after failing to disclose two approaches made by bookmakers during this year's Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Wednesday.

Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar who represented the Quetta Gladiators and opening batsman Shazaib Hassan of Karachi Kings were also questioned by the PCB's anti-corruption unit.

On March 23, Irfan approached the PCB and admitted the charges levelled against him by the cricket board.

The PCB will review the suspension after six months, at which point Irfan's contract may be restored.

That there is no further/additional breach of the PCB Code by Irfan within one (01) year of the commencement of the period of Ineligibility; and no previous breach of the Code by Irfan comes to light. "I had given the PCB the right to give me any punishment that they deem necessary", he said.

However, charges against the cricketers except Irfan include involvement in spot-fixing whereas Irfan was taken issue with by the board for not informing about contact with bookies while in Dubai.

The PCB has already provisionally suspended Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif for similar offences and has already formed a three-member tribunal, headed by a retired judge, to conduct an inquiry.

In a press conference, Irfan apologized to the nation and admitted that a mistake had been committed on behalf when he had not informed PCB about his meeting with the fixers. "I am hopeful that you all will forgive me for it", he added.

There were reports that Irfan took the stance that he could not report to the unit because he was upset due to the death of his parents, who passed away one after other in a space of one year.

Irfan made headlines for his extraordinary height - seven feet and one inch or 216 centimetres - when he made his global debut in 2010 and stands as the tallest-ever player to feature in world cricket.
