Southgate picks up pieces as England rebuild again

Southgate picks up pieces as England rebuild again

For too long the Three Lions have fallen flat at major tournaments, failing to make it out of their group at the last World Cup before bowing out to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016.

Jones, 25, was sent back to his club by England manager Gareth Southgate on Tuesday for X-rays after being injured in training prior to the national team's departure for Germany ahead of Wednesday's friendly against the world champions in Dortmund.

Before his first match in the permanent role against Germany on Wednesday, the manager had a meeting with his players outlining his vision.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been released from the England squad after picking up an injury in training.

Barnes believes that the former Under-21 boss is the right man for job and should be given time, even if he has a tricky bedding in period: "We may have disappointing results and performances but we have to stick with it". "It highlighted the highs and lows of a career and the ambitions that he sees for us".

"We have to change the way we do things", he said.

Southgate said: "Harry has leadership qualities".

"You have to be realistic; to get into any squad is based on merit and to do that you have to be playing at the top level", said Defoe, who has scored 19 goals in 55 games for England. He's been there and done it - played in major tournaments.

"I'm glad for Jermain", Barnes told Mirror Football, "But it's a bit sad we haven't got enough players forcing their way into the squad to have to go back to Jermain". Lithuania are next up on Sunday in a World Cup qualifier.
