Google redesigns app and website, introduces tappable search shortcuts

The update, which is available on the Google app for Android and iOS as well as Google.com via the mobile web (handheld devices), has only now rolled out in the US. You can already do a lot of these things within Google Search, but now you won't have to type the whole query out (for example, manually searching "nearby ATMs" or "NBA schedule" in lieu of the tap). However, the new shortcuts feature is created to offer one-tap results for more common questions like what's now playing at your local movie theater, or a quick lookup of the nearest places to eat. After a bit of research, Google found that users were hitting the bottom of the page looking for more to read.

A few of these tools will appear under the main search box on the app's home screen for quick access, but the full list is just another tap away.

With the new update, users will be allowed to tap on individual topics or areas of interest and get an entire feed of stories related to it. Android users can also tap a little arrow at the side to unearth a bunch more shortcuts, covering location-based tidbits such as nearby restaurants and bars, or tools such as Google Translate, games, and an internet speed test.

It's not just search results that are included in these shortcuts.

Announced in a blog post, these new shortcuts (as Google is calling them) help users quickly get the information they need.

The update is rolling out now to users in the US. Do let us know what you think of the new feature. Google's revenue rose 20 percent past year to $89 billion, propelled by digital ads served up on its search engine, YouTube and Gmail.
