'Beauty and the Beast' enchants S. Korean box office

'Beauty and the Beast' enchants S. Korean box office

Disney's live-action "Beauty" was a beast at the box office, opening with an estimated $170 million in North American ticket sales and setting a new high mark for family movies.

Beauty and the Beast earned $16.3 million from Thursday night shows, an impressive number and while we all knew this one was going to be a massive opening, even the hype didn't indicate $150 million at a bare minimum on the weekend. Well, that record has just been beaten, as Disney's remake of Beauty and the Beast took in $174.75 million this past weekend.

The movie musical, directed by Bill Condon, also co-stars Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Kline, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson. The previous record was set past year, in 2016, by "Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice", earning a total of $166 million.

Outside of a few scenes, the movie is an nearly exact remake of the classic 1991 Disney animated feature, which went on to win Oscars for best original score and best original song.

Disney's Beauty And The Beast has smashed box office records both at home and overseas over its opening weekend.

Beauty and the Beast has recorded the seventh best opening overall in the United States and Canada. "The Belko Experiment" opened in 1,341 locations, roughly a third of the theater count for a major studio offerings. An Alabama drive-in theater canceled showings before owners screened the film.

The latest remake follows the story of the bookworm Belle, played by Emma Watson, who, after growing up in a small French village, helps a troubled Beast to break the spell he is under.

The revamp has also set another record - by being the first Disney film to include a 'gay moment'. 2015's "Cinderella" grossed $544 million world-wide; 2014's "Maleficent", based on "Sleeping Beauty", collected $758 million; and 2010's "Alice in Wonderland", which kicked off the trend, collected just over $1 billion. The last domestic USA debut of similar size was Captain America: Civil War, which came out in May 2016, grossing $179.1 million its opening weekend.
