Paul Ryan Says Health Care Bill On Track, Despite Increasing GOP Opposition

Freshman Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, was among 13 members of the House Republican Study Committee who met Friday at the White House with President Donald Trump to discuss conservative proposals for revising the GOP health-care bill.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he intends to bring whatever the House passes directly to the Senate floor, bypassing committees.

That wasn't a particularly effective pitch to wavering Republicans fearful of taking a tough vote.

House Republicans leaving a White House meeting with Trump, as well as a Capitol Hill meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, listed several changes they expect to be made in order to attract both moderate and conservative party members who are now waffling about their support. John Thune, R-S.D., a member of party leadership, want to change the bill to make refundable tax credits more generous for older, lower income Americans.

"About half of what Texas hospitals get from Medicaid today comes through payments that are outside from the regular Medicaid program", she says, which adds up to $4 billion in federal funds every year. After the session, lawmakers who were there said the current bill would be changed to give states options to further limit Medicaid enrollment, a move that will help secure their backing.

But Trump still appeared open to some improvements to the bill, speaking in support of the ultimate product.

Those changes would doom the bill among House maniacs, who are busy working with Trump to make the bill meaner and even worse for Trump voters.

The tricky part was that they needed to find a way to help people immediately upon the bill going into place, but not risk pushing Americans out of insurance plans they could not afford without government aide that the Affordable Care Act helped to provide them. "I want everyone to know I'm 100 percent behind this".

The president griped that the media was not reporting fairly on the bill. This is why many feel the GOP bill will undergo multiple changes before it ever sees President Trump.

Although the current health-care system is far from flawless, Polacheck said, this plan - which could get a vote as early as next week - would make health care less secure and less affordable. "What Senate Leader Mitch McConnell promised when he was on the campaign trail was we're going to repeal Obamacare root and branch. It remains a disaster".

The Freedom Caucus plans to present its own amendment package on Monday.

Ryan, the chief proponent of the plan, acknowledged the challenges of winning over lawmakers.

He says it was the right thing for Texas not to expand Medicaid, but this bill punishes Texas for it. "I think insurers out there will be able to create products that are attractive to folks making under a certain amount of money", he said.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence meet with members of the Republican Study Committee.

Rep. Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin is concerned with how many employers would provide coverage under the Republican-sponsored plan.

The GOP bill - the American Health Care Act- would repeal major elements of Obama's law, cap future federal spending on Medicaid for low-income people, and reverse tax increases on wealthy Americans used to finance coverage expansion.
