Iran Condemns Israel's Violation of Syrian Airspace

Iran Condemns Israel's Violation of Syrian Airspace

Israel is believed to have carried out several attacks on Syrian soil in recent years, but usually refrains from confirming or denying reports on its alleged actions there.

The Israeli military said its aircraft struck several targets in Syria and were back in Israeli-controlled airspace when several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria toward the Israeli jets.

The Israelis said the incident was dramatic, as it was the first one when the Syrian army responded directly in such a way to the repetitive Israeli strikes on Syrian military positions in Syria throughout the six-year-old war.

"However, the exceptional events forced the Israeli army to release an unprecedented statement in which it acknowledged it carried out strikes against Syrian targets and that it had intercepted missiles fired by the Syrian air defense system", Amir said.

"At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF aircraft compromised", a statement from the Israel Defense Forces said.

Israel has shot down a Syrian missile using its most advanced anti-missile system for the first time, Israeli media say.

The Syrian military said the Israeli planes targeted a military site near the ancient Roman city of Palmyra in the east of Homs province, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported. At least one of the missiles crossed the Israeli border, setting off air-raid sirens in Galilee before it was shot down by a missile-defence system. The Iran-backed group is sworn to Israel's destruction and fought a month-long war with the Jewish state in 2006, stated the Chicago Tribune.

An Israeli air force jet fighter plane takes off from Tel Nof Air Force base in central Israel, Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. Last April, Netanyahu confirmed that Israel had struck Syria "dozens of times", breaking with the policy of remaining quiet about involvement in its war-torn northern neighbor.

Hezbollah is fighting alongside President Bashar Assad in the brutal Syrian civil war. "None of the aircraft was hit, but one of the missiles was intercepted north of Jerusalem by an Israeli missile defence system". The Israeli army did not reveal the target of its overnight airstrikes. "When we identify attempts to transfer advanced weapons..."

The Palestinian daily al Quds earlier on Sunday cited Syrian sources who said the Syrian army had targeted an Israeli drone in Quneitra, causing the drone to retreat.
