Diamond weighing over 700 carats found in Sierra Leone

Diamond weighing over 700 carats found in Sierra Leone

He found the 706-carat diamond, one of the 20 largest ever, in the alluvial mines in the Kono district.

The precious stone was found by Emmanuel Momoh, who was working in the Kono region, in the east of the country.

Sierra Leone's government has attempted to crack down on cross-border diamond trafficking to persuade foreign investors that "blood diamonds" that fuelled its civil war are a thing of the past.

He said: 'Most recent exceptional diamond discoveries have been made by large commercial miners that mine very large volumes of kimberlite ore and process it with advanced equipment.

Koroma added Sierra Leone as a whole would benefit from the discovery and the pastor would get "what is due".

The Sierra Leonean government, with the support of several western governments and global agencies, has continued to clamp down on the trade of "Blood Diamonds", the worldwide trafficking of diamonds by local guerrilla fighters and foreign collaborators who use brutal slave labor.

The diamond was kept in safe custody in Sierra Leone's central bank.

Once the diamond is officially evaluated under the Kimberley Process, which ensures diamonds are "conflict-free", it will be sold in Sierra Leone through a transparent bidding process.

In May of a year ago, Lucara Diamond announced the sale of an 813-carat diamond recovered from the Karowe mine in Botswana for a record-setting $63 million. It is believed to be the 13th largest diamond ever found.

Freelance, or artisanal, miners are common in Sierra Leone's diamond-rich areas, reports the BBC. Even with a blemish, the diamond could easily be worth millions.

Sierra Leone's gross national income per capita stood at US$620 (S$870) in 2015, according to World Bank data.

In May of 2016, Lucara, a diamond-mining fund sold an 813-carat diamond for a whopping $63 million.
