Search continues for cobra slithering loose in Ocala neighborhood

The snake escaped about 9 p.m. from a cage in a home on Northeast 9th Street near Ocala Tuscawilla Park, according to a report. To make things even weirder, the snake was apparently being watched by the snake owner's apprentice at the time it freed itself. It's not yet clear whether it escaped the residence, the Florida Wildlife Commission said.

Search crews and the snake's owner said Tuesday night that they were confident the venomous reptile was still inside the home.

The owner of a venomous cobra that escaped Monday night from an enclosure in Ocala, Florida, has all the proper licensing required to own unsafe reptiles.

The blunder is such an exemplary act of vaudevillian slapstick that it has spurned its own semi-amusing parody Twitter account.

"You know you got to be safe because if you get bite that's your life". If I'm not coming out the door and looking around, it's terrifying. "We're so close. I could see if they are secluded, but this is a neighborhood (with) a lot of kids and people".

The reptile's handler, Brian Purdy, is licensed to keep the venomous snake.

She said the snakes are typically shy, tend to hide from people and only strike if threatened.

Purdy received his permit in May 2016 and is also the owner of three other venomous snakes and two venomous lizards, the FWC said. The highly venomous snake belongs to a private resident. The man said he had made sure that the room was secured.

The snakes must be kept in some kind of enclosure, and that cage or crate must then be contained inside an escape-proof room or outbuilding.

In September 2015, an eight-foot cobra escaped from an Orlando home, noted CBS News, and was found a month later beneath an Orlando woman's clothes dryer.

Neighbor Brandon Lacey said only the snake's capture will ease his nerves.

Kennedy's trial is expected to begin March 15.
