Punjab Assembly election results: Why anxiety levels are high this time

Punjab Assembly election results: Why anxiety levels are high this time

The exit polls today predicted a hung assembly in the key Hindi heartland state of Uttar Pradesh where BJP would emerge as the largest single party, winning anywhere between 164 and 210 of the 403 seats.

What looked like a never-ending set of elections to the state assemblies of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur will come to an end by Saturday when the results are announced. In reality, however, the AIADMK won a 134 seats and formed the majority government in the state.

Of the 60 Assembly berths in Manipur, the India Today-Axis predicted Congress government with the party getting between and BJP managing 16-22 seats.

The remaining seats are likely to be grabbed by regional parties like Irom Sharmila's People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) which has been able to make an impact on the people this elections. However, at least one poll predicts a hung house in UP, say exit polls.

However, Manipur Elections 2017 exit poll by India Today-axis tells a different story. There were some 1,100 candidates in the triangular contest between the ruling combine, the Congress and AAP, which contested the Assembly elections in the state for the first time.

Region wise, BJP may get 15-17 seats in Garhwal, and 7-9 seats each in Kumaun and plains, while the Congress may get 15-17 seats in Kumaun, 10-12 seats in plains and only 4-5 seats in Garhwal.

The reproduction of the story/photograph in any form will be liable for legal action. Predicting on similar lines, Today's Chanakya gave the BJP 53 seats and the Congress 15. The SP had conceded 105 seats to the Congress while keeping 298 for itself, after hectic negotiations. Until they were out, an average of the polls still suggested that the BJP would need help reaching the halfway mark, with a projected average seat share of around 180. However, pollsters are divided about whether the Congress or the AAP will form government; while HuffPost-CVoter gives the AAP the edge in terms of seats, there is little to choose between the two in terms of voteshare.

If indeed these results pan out as forecast-exit polls are known to have got it wrong in the past-then Indian politics will witness a benchmark moment.

According to NewsX-MRC poll, the BJP and its allies may win 185 seats, the Congress-Samajwadi Party combine 120 and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) 90. In 2017, it gives the BJP a massive majority, at around 285 seats, with the SP-Congress alliance being a distant second. The new entrant AAP is likely to bag between 36-46 seats.
