57 killed in United States raid against Al-Qaeda

Medics at the scene said 30 people had been killed, including 10 women and three children. USA helicopter gunships and fighter aircraft provided cover for the raid force, according to another defense official who also spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive details. "Why kill children? This is the new administration - it's very sad, a big crime", her grandfather, Nasser al-Awlaki, told Reuters. The aircraft was destroyed in place because it couldn't be flown again, defense officials said.

United States commandos are reported to have carried out a major raid in central Yemen against al-Qaeda forces.

Helicopter-born commandos attacked the house of senior al-Qaeda leader Abdulraoof al-Dhahab in Qayfa district in al-Bayda province, a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media, said.

The Pentagon says the three service members were wounded in a raid, and another member of the military was injured when an aircraft had to make a "hard landing at a nearby location". A USA service member was also killed and three were wounded, the Pentagon shared in a statement.

A US aircraft was reportedly damaged after a "hard landing" during the operation, and had to be destroyed.

A USA soldier has died during a raid on an al-Qaeda militant base in central Yemen, according to officials.

The American elite forces did not seize any militants or take any prisoners offsite, said a USA military official who spoke on condition of anonymity. An official with al-Qaida corroborated the killings, describing the attack as a "massacre".

A Saudi-led military coalition has been helping government forces battle the rebels for almost two years.

The military also said that no civilians were killed as a result of the attack, according to CNN.

The death of al-Dhahab was confirmed by al-Qaeda on its official Telegram account, praising the dead man as a "holy warrior".
