Doomsday Clock Tick-Tocks Closer to Midnight, Sparking Concern Among Scientists

Doomsday Clock Tick-Tocks Closer to Midnight, Sparking Concern Among Scientists

It is the second closest it has been.

But no one has encapsulated the emotions of these early Trump days more dramatically than a group of scientists, who every year since 1947 determine whether to move the hands of the Doomsday Clock.

Over the course of 2016, the global security landscape darkened as the worldwide community failed to come effectively to grips with humanity's most pressing existential threats, nuclear weapons and climate change, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists warned.

As a primary reason for moving the clock foward this year, after leaving it at three minutes 'til midnight the last two years, the report cites newly elected President Donald Trump's "ill-considered" and "intemperate" statements about expanding the USA nuclear arsenal, his comments encouraging other countries to acquire nuclear weapons, and his apparent skepticism of climate science.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has advanced its symbolic Doomsday Clock by 30 seconds, suggesting humanity is an alarming 2 minutes and 30 seconds away from the brink of an apocalypse.

The first week of Trump's Presidency was marked by an abundance of warnings amidst a flurry of executive orders that seemed created to deliver on Trump's campaign promises.

"In addition to the existential threats posed by nuclear weapons and climate change, new global realities emerged", executive director and publisher Rachel Bronson says in a statement accompanying the bulletin's annual announcement.

Before 2017, the clock's hands were set this close to midnight in the year 1953 that marked the competition of the nuclear weapons between the United States and the Soviet Union.

"Threats of nuclear warfare hung in the background as Pakistan and India faced each other warily across the Line of Control in Kashmir after militants attacked two Indian army bases", they said.

The Bulletin's science and security board made a decision to advance the clock "in part based on the words of a single person: Donald Trump, the new President of the United States", it said in a news release on Thursday. Since 2007, the Clock has also reflected climate change, global warming and new inventions in the life sciences and technology that could harm humanity leading to the end of human race on the planet.

"But when that person is the new president of the United States, his words matter". That's a half-minute closer to catastrophe than last year and the closest it has been to "doomsday" in 64 years during the Cold War. "It they do not, wise citizens must step forward and lead the way".
